Comirnaty (Pfizer-BionTech COVID-19 Vaccine)

Type of Vaccine: mRNA vaccine

  • Contains instructions to make a protein specifically found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus

  • Does not contain the (live) virus and cannot give you COVID-19

Who can receive this vaccine: individuals 6 months of age and older (dose varies by age)

Efficacy of Vaccine:

  • Complete vaccination is effective against hospitalization and death

 

Nuvaxovoid (Novovax COVID-19 Vaccine)

Type of Vaccine: protein based vaccine

  • Contains a protein specifically found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus

  • Does not contain the (live) virus and cannot give you COVID-19

Who can receive this vaccine: individuals 18 years and older

Efficacy of Vaccine:

  • Complete vaccination is effective against hospitalization and death (2 doses at least 21 days apart)

Spikevax (Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine)

Type of Vaccine: mRNA vaccine

  • Contains instructions to make a protein specifically found on the surface of the COVID-19 virus

  • Does not contain the (live) virus and cannot give you COVID-19

Who can receive this vaccine: individuals 6 months of age and older (dose varies by age)

Efficacy of Vaccine:

  • Complete vaccination is effective against hospitalization and death

 

Bottom Line: all currently approved vaccines in Canada meet the minimum standard of reducing severity of illness, hospitalizations and death by more than 50%.
